Richard Rosen
Richard Rosen is the director of Piedmont Yoga. He began his practice of Hatha Yoga in 1980, and from 1982 to 1985 trained at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in San Francisco. In 1987, along with his good friends Rodney Yee and Clare Finn, he opened Piedmont Yoga where he’s taught continuously ever since.On January 3, 2009 he taught his 5000th public class at PYS.
Richard is also a contributing editor for Yoga Journal magazine. Over the years he’s written feature articles, book reviews, and a variety of columns. Since 1990, he’s been YJ’s audio/video review columnist, and in 2008 he submitted his 300th review, happily of a video by Rod Yee. Richard is the author of three books, The Yoga of Breath (Shambhala 2002), Yoga for 50+ (Ulysses 2004), and Pranayama Beyond the Basics (Shambhala 2006). A set of six CDs of his pranayama instruction will be issued by Shambhala in Spring, 2010, and Shambhala will also publish Homage to the Source, a book about traditional Hatha Yoga in the Fall of 2010.
Since 1989 he’s been on the board of directors of the California Yoga Teachers Association, and in 2008 joined the board of its grant-making wing, the Yoga Dana Foundation, which supports California yoga teachers working with underserved populations, such as at-risk and incarcerated youth and disabled students.
